Technology - scary stuff.

Technophobia is the fear or dislike of advanced technology, while technophilia is the opposite.

Within the industry we meet lots of people exhibiting classic signs of technophilia. We also see the signs of tension within organisations where there are also strong drivers for reducing chances of human error by limiting change. New technology can cause tension!

When existing control or protection equipment is up for end-of-life replacement, the conservative route is often chosen to try to maintain the existing feel/function. Alternatively you can be an agent-for-change and introduce new methods and technology. While not advocating change-for-change-sake, at HV Power we fully support those prepared to stand up with us and say “No apologies- we guarantee this new approach is going to be different, but we also guarantee it is going to be better”.

Take a step back from the detail and ask “what are the application requirements, what are the user’s needs, and what are the management needs”? Thanks to technology, you can often come at an old problem in a completely different way, not only solving the problem but introducing new functions, new efficiencies and better information for management.

Technology that integrates a number of functions into one box can offer real cost savings in the installation, commissioning and operation of the plant....while at the same time, delivering better information to the utility.

You can either embrace change or become a luddite. We suggest the former course of action.

The Electro-Industries Shark 200-S data-logging wireless smart sub-meter is a finalist in the US Consulting-Specifying Engineer (CSE) magazine’s 2010 Product of the Year award. The award recognises outstanding design and utility for products. Being selected as a finalist affirms the uniqueness and excellence of the Shark 200-S sub-meter.

The Shark 200-S smart sub-meter utilises 802.11 WIFI protocol to report back highly accurate energy data. It has extensive data logging capability, making it perfect for modern cost allocation and energy management applications.

All Shark meters are backed by a four year warranty.

Tekron TCG 01-E Ethernet equipped GPS clock

Tekron clocks are very reliable. They are also factory backed by a 10 year warranty. For some applications however, customers demand very high levels of availability and redundancy. Tekron’s blog site details one method of achieving redundant capability with two independent TCG 01’s.

PQ-Box 100 (WinPQ mobil) Power Quality software upgrade

Size matters

The list of new features to be included in the next version of WinPQ mobil (V1.5.33) has been released. A copy of this has been emailed to the many owners of the PQ-Box 100. If you would like a copy of what’s new, contact Warwick Beech (warwickb@hvpowerautomation.com).

If you have a particular interest in Power Quality, you too can join the email distribution list for automatic notification on updates and future editions of “PQ Box 100 Hints and Tips”. Simply follow the “manage subscription” link at the bottom of this email.

New features include FFT analysis of oscilloscope events, measurement of ripple control current, and a variety of incremental enhancements. It’s easy to see why the number of NZ PQ-Box 100 users is continuing to grow! An email notification will be sent to all PQ subscribers when the software (V1.5.33) is available for download.

Novel surge protection for LV data & process circuits

Voltage Regulator Advanced Training

Need to protect 4-20mA loops, or serial RS 232/422/485 cables from surges and lightning?

DEHN & Söhne’s Blitzductor XTU combined lightning current and surge arrester with actiVsense technology was heralded as a “World Novelty” when it was introduced, but what makes it novel? It is the addition of DEHN’s patented “actiVsense” technology that makes it stand out as quite different from any other surge protector.

“ActiVsense” automatically detects the operating voltage of the signals to be protected and optimally adjusts the voltage protection level to the actual signal voltage. This makes Blitzductor XTU a truly universal arrester, capable of replacing fixed voltage units ranging anywhere from 0 to 180V range. As each device protects 2 circuit pairs, each Blitzductor can therefore also protect 2 signals of different voltages! This one size fits all approach is a real advantage, as it reduces the need to hold a variety of spare arrester types typically used across an installation, which in turn assists in the planning and maintenance processes.

The Blitzductor XTU with actiVsense can be used for 90% of all information technology and process applications . As a product, it’s truly novel and unique to DEHN & Söhne.
