Seminars and training courses

HV Power have conducted a number of user-paid training courses this year, and we have a couple of high calibre free seminars coming up.

We generally run our paid training courses from our Auckland office. This enables us to keep costs at a minimum and to have access to a wide range of test equipment. Your staff can learn from our experience and get up and running with products more quickly than reading the manual and learning by their own trial and error. We do also offer these courses customised to your specific requirements and these can be run at your premises (subject to minimum requirements). Typically training courses are specific to a product, but we do also offer general technical and application training.

HV Power also host free seminars, generally using the skills of visiting overseas experts. Here, the supplier provides an update of the current state of the industry and how their range of products can be used to solve topical problems. While such presentations have a supplier content, in most cases the technical content is universal. We are confident that this year’s Line Distance Protection seminar from Siemens will be very valuable to all in the industry. The one and two day seminars will allow for an in-depth look at a range of technical and practical issues. We believe you will find it very difficult to find in-depth technical training available in NZ at this price and convenience elsewhere, so we do hope you can join us.

      Checking Overhead Line Sag

Meaure Line SagSimple, reliable and error free. Designed for outdoor use (wet or dry), DEHN’s new telescopic insulated pole is ideal for measuring the clearance to ground of overhead lines (up to 33 kV L-L).

The built-in scale allows the direct measurement of total height of your line above ground. From the compact 1.7 m starting position, the pole is extended until contact is made with the (live) line, and height scale then read. Telescoping from the vertical position makes raising and lowering simple and safe, even with a single person. Weighing under 6 kg, with a foot bracket to provide additional operator support make this device simple to use. Maximum height is 10.6 m.

The telescopic pole can also be fitted with a voltage detector head for the proving of lines.

Broken Conductor Detection using Flexible Protection Functions

Broken Conductor photoWant to add additional protection functions to your IED? Many SIPROTEC relays offer flexible protection functions which allow the user to create a protection function based on a selection of a measured or calculated value.

An example of use of the flexible protection functions is to add sensitive broken conductor detection improving network reliability and safety. For broken conductor detection, simple negative sequence current detection cannot be reliably used, as the threshold required to be insensitive to normal full load imbalance (load imbalance and CT errors), may be too high to detect a broken conductor on a lightly loaded line.

The flexible protection function allows the ratio of the negative sequence to positive sequence current to be calculated. Since this ratio is nearly constant with variations in load, a more sensitive broken conductor setting can be applied.

Download the latest SIPROTEC Application Example to see how simple this function can be implemented using, as an example, the SIPROTEC 7SJ80.

SIPROTEC Flexible Protection Functions versus CFC’s

CFC chartIn reading the above item, you may have wondered what the difference is between the SIPROTEC “CFC” function and the “Flexible Protection Function”.

Using DIGSI software for application of settings, the CFC (Continuous Function Chart) is an editor used to create customised logic that can be compiled to run on the SIPROTEC 4 and Compact (80 series) protection relay. CFC’s are used to provide additional/customised functionality such as interlocking schemes, switching sequences and the creation of user defined messages. Creating CFC logic is via a simple drag and drop of logic symbols using a graphical user interface based on IEC 61131 standard for industrial controllers. Note; in order to program CFC’s, the Professional version of DIGSI is required.

Flexible Protection Functions operate like any other protection element, but the user can choose what measurement element they require. The measurement element can be selected from a range of measured values, calculated values, or binary inputs. Threshold, timing and trip/alarm parameters may also be set. Flexible Protection Functions operate the internal device pickup and trip elements and are guaranteed to perform at protection speed.

Up to 20 user-defined flexible protection elements can be created and these are simpler to implement than using CFC’s. For “power-users”, flexible protection functions may be augmented with CFC’s for added flexibility and control.

Flexible Protection Functions are available in 7SJ61, 7SJ62, 7SJ64 overcurrent protection relays, 7UT613/63x transformer protection relays & Compact 7SJ80 overcurrent and 7SK80 motor protection relays. All SIPROTEC 4 and Compact (80 series) protection relays support CFC logic.
