Acts of nature and man

This month we faced a short term disruption to the supply of goods from two of our German suppliers, due to “acts of nature” causing flight disruptions throughout Europe. However, it was comforting to see the proficiency of our suppliers in times of adversity. It appears no significant disruptions to HV Power’s activities have resulted.

Our Wellington office also was a victim of “acts of man” in the 22nd April power disruption to the Wellington region. Nothing serious for Warwick – actually a shorter working day and time at home putting the batteries in the emergency radio to find out what was going on. It is reassuring to know, that although the fault was due to maintenance work activity, the network protection devices took appropriate action, limiting damage and power was soon restored.

So April was a month where we were reminded that the services we normally take for granted are prone to acts of man and nature. Fortunately in the NZ electricity industry, due to work place safety and good design, many potential incidents are avoided. However, if they do occur, good design and management certainly help mitigate the effects.

      DIGSI/SIPROTEC and REG-D/DA training

PQ-Box 100 Power Quality Analyser

Our May DIGSI & SIPROTEC training course has been fully subscribed.

Our next scheduled Auckland training courses are:

  • REG-D/DA Advanced Training - 6th August 2010
  • DIGSI & SIPROTEC Advanced Training - 14th October 2010

To maximise training effectiveness, courses are limited to 10 participants. Please feel free to contact Vladimir to pre-book your attendance for either or both of these two courses.

Please note that HV Power does provide similar training for our customers at your facility, so if you have a larger group, or the Auckland venue is not convenient, contact Vladimir (ph 09 304 1685) to discuss your needs.

      DIGSI V4.8x Patch 2

PQ-Box 100 Power Quality Analyser

A patch has been released for DIGSI 4.80 (or later), where DIGSI device drivers have been downloaded from the web. A problem may occur if device drivers are uninstalled, where unintended files may also be deleted.

To check if you need to apply the patch, Open “Start – Settings – Control Panel – Add or Remove Programs”. If both “DIGSI 4 SIPROTEC 4 Devices” and “DIGSI 4 Devices” are listed, then please download and run the patch file.

Access the SIPROTEC web page (www.siprotec.com) and click on the SOFTWARE tab, then select DIGSI 4 and scroll down to the "Service/Update" section for further information.

ParaGramer – taking care of changes in topography

Paragramer automation of tap changer controlBy monitoring the status of circuit breakers, bus ties, disconnectors and bus couplers associated with a substation bus, A-Eberle’s REG-D and REG-DA regulators can be configured to automatically determine which transformer is to work in parallel with another. The ParaGramer feature also shows the switching status of the individual transformers as a one line diagram on the Regulator’s LCD, thus showing operators the current status.

The ParaGramer function can automatically react to changes in the topography of the substation such as scheduled maintenance to a transformer, or network switching actions. This simplifies network switching requirements by automating the transformer parallel logic. For example; when a transformer is returned to service, the self restore tapping function checks the parallel status and adjusts transformers to the correct parallel operation. Contact us to see how the ParaGramer function can simplify and improve your system operation.
