Keeping ourselves
up-to-date

Keeping ourselves up-to-date Whilst the principles of electrical engineering will never change, the approaches taken to implement devices on the electricity network are continually evolving, thanks to technology. At HV Power we believe it’s our personal responsibility to develop professionally. This includes taking an active interest in relevant developments in the specialised disciplines we chose to work in.

The recent TechCon conference in Sydney provided an excellent opportunity for engineers and others involved in the specification and maintenance of High Voltage Assets, to attend technical papers, meet with suppliers and gain new knowledge. For the first time ever, HV Power participated in the event as an exhibitor. We were impressed with the calibre of the presentations, the attendees and the inquiries received. It was disappointing however that very few of our NZ customers were present.

This month a variety of opportunities to learn are being provided by EEA at the annual conference being held in Christchurch. Scheduled for Week 24 EEA are providing a number of workshops ahead of the conference. On Thursday June 17th and 18th at the Trade exhibition Mike Strong and Rob Knight will be manning a joint stand with Siemens.

As a final note - Warwick Beech and I will be travelling to Europe soon to keep abreast of new developments amongst our three German suppliers A. Eberle , DEHN and Siemens. Who said technology wasn’t exciting?

New email addresses for HV PowerFrom the 8th June 2010, HV Power staff will be introducing new email addresses. We will be changing from @hvpower.co.nz to @hvpowerautomation.com addresses.

Never fear, emails sent to us at @hvpower.co.nz will still reach us. Just expect new emails and replies to start coming from @hvpowerautomation.com addresses.

Please update your email white lists/SPAM settings as required to ensure emails from our new addresses get to you.

New Tekron TCG 01-E GPS clock with remote engineering access

Tekron TCG 01-E GPS Clock with remote engineering access

Tekron have announced the details of the TCG 01-E GPS clock with remote engineering access. Based on the ubiquitous TCG 01, the new TCG 01-E features an Ethernet UTP port for remote engineering management (rather than a RS-232 port). This Ethernet UTP port (TCP/IP) can also optionally provide NTP/SNTP output.

The UTP port also supports SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) allowing the TCG 01-E status to be monitored via other network devices.

Later this year, the TCG 01-E will also support, as an option, IEEE 1588 PTP (Precision Time Protocol). What’s really clever is that existing “E” clocks in the field will be able to be upgraded using the remote engineering capability, so you don’t need to delay implementing the new TCG 01-E today.

The TCG 01-E is the logical next generation clock for customers who’ve always specified TCG 01’s. However, Tekron is committed to supporting existing customers, so the TCG 01 will still be available for those who wish to retain full compatibility with the older design.

The TCG 01-E is supplied with a new improved Configuration Tool which supports the TCG 01-E, TCG 02-E and TTM 01-E. The existing configuration tool will remain available for TCG 01’s.

Remote engineering access via TCP/IP is now available with the following Tekron products:

  • TCG 01-E     Fully featured GPS clock with multiple output options
  • TCG 02-E     19” rack mount with 2 x IEC 320 power supply inputs (100-300 Vdc/85-264 Vac)
  • TTM 01-E     Compact low cost GPS clock

The TCG 01-E is available for order now. Contact HV Power for price and availability or click here for further TCG 01-E information.

Hardened Ethernet products just got tougher !

GarrettCom Hardened Ethernet Switches

Electrically hardened and temperature hardened Ethernet devices have been available for some time. However, for some applications, a weakness can be the use of standard RJ connectors. GarrettCom’s 6KM provides a solution with military-style M12 connectors. These rugged connectors are ideal where shock and vibration resistance is required, such as mobile applications.

The 6KM provides up to 8 copper ports, or a mixture of Gigabit and/or fibre ports. Features include:

  • Extended temperature (-40 to +85 deg C)
  • Withstand polluted environments (high IP rating and conformal coating options)
  • Protected against transients, ESD & electrical noise - hardened (IEEE 1613 Class 2)
  • Dual redundant power supply options
  • Cyber secure
  • Vibration hardened

      PIXIT for SIPROTEC 7SJ6x, 7SJ80 & 7SK80

DEHN surge protection training

An updated PIXIT (protocol implementation extra information for testing) document has been released for the Siemens SIPROTEC 7SJ6x, 7SJ80 and 7SK80 protection relays. If you are utilising IEC 61850 protocols and using these IED models, please download the latest PIXIT for your reference.

      Magnetic Test Probe

Magnetic test probe

The new magnetic voltage probe is proving popular with our PQ-Box 100 Power Quality Analyser users.

The probe fits onto standard 4mm safety banana plugs, and provides a magnetic connection (that makes it “stick”) onto 7 mm diameter screw terminals, i.e. the screw terminals found on most popular 35mm DIN mounted circuit breakers.

Using these magnetic test probes eliminates the need to have to physically hold older-style test probes onto to a screw/terminal head while making measurements. They are a useful addition to any technician’s tool box. We are happy to make these available for non PQ-Box 100 applications. Cost is NZ$160+GST for a set of 3 x Red & 1 x Blue adapter.
